Greetings all!
We’re very excited to be launching this summer series on key writings in Catholic Social Teaching. After Leo XIV’s election, there’s been a great deal more interest in learning about this tradition that his papal name is pointing us to.
So, first up: Rerum Novarum, from 1891—the granddaddy of them all.
You can find the full text here.
The Details
Sarah and I will lead off with a brief introduction to the piece, and then depending on how many people show up, we’ll break off into smaller groups to have some discussion on the work itself: the questions it raises, the implications it has for contemporary faith and practice, and what kinds of things it leaves unspoken.
Entering into reading Catholic Social Teaching is like entering into an ongoing argument that started long before you walked in the room. People are making reference to folks that aren’t even there, making allusions to inside jokes, and citing conversations that don’t seem directly germane to the topic at hand, but are.
So, the best way to start is to start. Read the text. Come up with your own observations. If there’s something that doesn’t look familiar, go chase down the footnotes and see what happens.
We’ll start at 6:30 p.m., and go for about an hour or so. Come join us!
