The first book I ever wrote, in 2013, was difficult. Writing my dissertation was a process of taking some very vague intuitions, wrestling them to the ground, and hoping that in some small way, something true was said. There’s much to be said about a doctoral program, but one of the main things that I think it does positively is this:
It teaches you how to write out a thought in specific and expansive ways.
I turned that dissertation into a book in 2013, and since then, have authored and edited eight volumes, with two more on the way. I love writing in a way that I’ve loved few activities in my life, and want to help others do that as well. It’s no small thing to take an idea and stretch it out, to take a small nugget of an idea and see it become something bigger.

Tomorrow night, we’ll do the last half of Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death. It’s full of insightful connections about how a media ecology corrupts—and he does mean corrupts—discourse about religion, politics, education, and more. Come for the zingers about televangelists, but even Sesame Street is going to catch a stray bullet, so beware.
